Ardmeallie and Boat of Turtory Fishings

The Ardmeallie fishings comprise two beats, accommodating two rods each, on the beautiful River Deveron in North East Scotland. The Deveron as a whole has the fifth highest salmon and sea trout rod catch in Scotland.

The fishings lie approximately 8 miles down river from Huntly, just up from the Bridge of Marnoch on the A97 (Huntly to Banff road). Ardmeallie is on the left bank of the river whilst Boat of Turtory is on the right. There are two sections to the Ardmeallie beat, separated by the Manse Pool, belonging to the Church of Scotland. Each beat has a fishing hut (for day use only). The Ardmeallie beat is about one mile long, Boat of Turtory about three quarters of a mile. There are six named pools on Boat of Turtory and six on Ardmeallie. New tenants will be shown over the beats.

Fishing is by fly only except when the water is high, when spinning is permitted.Thigh waders are adequate. In both beats fly rods from 12' to 15' are sufficient. Fly sizes are mainly 6's in the early part of the season going down to 12's for the summer months. Worming is not permitted.

The salmon runs start in March. March, April and May are best for spring fishing for salmon. The months of June, July and August are best for sea trout fishing. Grilse runs begin normally in June and carry on right through to September. The summer salmon runs are usually from July to the end of October. Brown trout fishing is at its best from the beginning of the season until May, then there are evening rises throughout the summer.

The beats are usually fished on alternate days:

  • Boat of Turtory (right bank) on Monday, Wednesday and Friday
  • Ardmeallie (left bank) on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday
